In 1983, District 11’s Trading and General Service Company (former Phuong Nam Cultural Corporation) opened a series of stores on Ba Thang Hai Street which specialized in cultural products such as books, newspapers, discs, stationery, etc. At that time, in the context of the difficult subsidized economy, although cultural products were necessary, they were rare and unattractive. However, the series of stores received a strong support from customers in the area and neighbor districts.

Only three years later, with that support, the first bookstore under self-selected form which opened in Vietnam in 1986 named Phu Tho Bookstore (former Phuong Nam Bookstore at #940 Ba Thang Hai Street, Ward 15, District 11, Ho Chi Minh City). To create a big milestone affecting strongly to cultural products retail businesses, hundreds of large-sized bookstores under self-selected form which provide various products and services professionally by staff in Vietnamese traditional “ao dai” have been opened to welcome all kinds of customers all over the country.

Since that first bookstore up to now, Phuong Nam Cultural Corporation has been establishing 27 Phuong Nam bookstores, 6 Walt Disney’s product stores and 7 attractive book cafés in the country. (Please see the attachment for the store list).

Despite of the impact of the world’s economic recession and pressures of development in such a difficult period as present, the growth rate of Phuong Nam’s retail chain is ranking at the highest among Phuong Nam business operation fields. Store sales revenue almost reached VND 200 billion and gross profit rate was over 20% in the first six months of 2009, in which revenue per area was as follows:

With the strong determination to invest in the most effective business field, PNC’s leaders and strategists are continuing expanding retail chain and making this chain become the most developed one besides other company members such as Phuong Nam Film, Phuong Nam Books and Phuong Nam Brand, etc. During the first half of July of 2009 (from 10/07 to 13/07/2009) PNC officially opened three bookstores as follows:

Phuong Nam Bookstore at Garden Mall – Hanoi

On 10/07/2009, Phuong Nam Cultural Corporation (PNC) opened the first bookstore in Hanoi which was also the 26^th Phuong Nam bookstore nationwide. It is located on the 3^rdfloor of The Garden Trade Center (in The Manor Towers, My Dinh, Tu Liem District, Hanoi).

With the area of 500m² and investment of more than VND 10 billion, Phuong Nam bookstore displays and sells more than 20,000 book titles and thousands of discs, educational tools, stationery, etc. On the occasion of opening, from 06/07/2009 to 11/07/2009, Phuong Nam Cultural Corporation issues 200,000 coupons at schools, office buildings and supermarkets, etc. Customers having coupons buy things from 10/07 to 16/7/2009 will get 15% - 30% discount for selected items. The first 50 customers who buy more than VND 200,000 will get one Walt Disney gift.

Phuong Nam Bookstore – Pharmacy Department (Ho Chi Minh City)

On July 11, 2009, Phuong Nam Cultural Corporation opened the expanded current bookstore at Pharmacy Department – 2A Le Duan Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The bookstore is located at the corner of Le Duan and Dinh Tien Hoang. It specializes in foreign language books for special purposes which are adequate and newest for those who specialize in medical, design, art field, etc.

With the investment of VND 15 billion, Phuong Nam bookstore at Pharmacy Department follows the style of book café which is familiar with book-lovers who want to read books while drinking coffee. In order to build the typical feature for Phuong Nam book café specializing in medical and pharmacy field, Phuong Nam café at Pharmacy Department will hold monthly seminars of “Health Café” for those who want to share knowledge, get health advice and cure skills from prestigious specialists and doctors. Besides, there will have cultural exchange activities such as author-and-work exchange show, introduction of outstanding writers and works by Phuong Nam style.

Phuong Nam Bookstore at Big C Trade Center (Hue City)

On 13/07/2009, the 27^th bookstore of PNC will be open on the 4^th Floor of Big C Trade Center located in Ba Trieu area, Hung Vuong Street, Phu Hoi ward, Hue City.

With the area of 300 m² behind Phuong Nam bookstore (Phu Xuan – Hue City) at Trang Tien bridge, new Phuong Nam bookstore at Big C Trade Center promises to be a professional one with more than 10,000 book titles, stationery, souvenir, disc, kid toys, etc.

On the occasion of opening, there will be a promotional program called “ Khai trương may mắn, nhận quà liền tay “ (Lucky opening, get gift right away) during 10 days from 13/07 to 22/07/2009. Prizes will be LG TV, Soundmax speakers and thousands of gifts with the value up to VND 50 million.
